The Bone Show with Butch Anthony

It's always a surprise to see what Butch Anthony unpacks from his full-to-the-brim truck. You never know what treasures he has created from the detritus of past lives. The Bone Show is stocked with re-purposed art, furniture, sculptures, chandeliers, and more curiosities than you can shake a jawbone at! Hope you can visit. Show dates are January 28 - February 27, 2011.

Felting Workshop with Lisa Klakulak

It was a barrel of felting fun from January 14 to 16 when Lisa Klakulak visited the gallery for a workshop on sculptural jewelry. Her phenomenal expertise and generous wisdom were appreciated by all ten participants. We will be hosting Lisa again next year, so if you'd like to stay up to date on future workshops, email us at info@jtfolkart.com and we will add you to our e-letter.

Memory Jars Extravaganza

Talk about talent! We had such a great time when Melissa Menzer spent the day with 11 willing students who all created Memory Jars. Folks brought plenty of imagination and created amazing jars. Melissa is an easy going teacher who always brings the best supply stash! She'll be back for a Spring workshop, so don't fret if you missed it this time.

Time for a Workshop that's Fun!

If a workshop is FUN, shouldn't we call it a funshop? No matter what we call it, this Saturday, Dec. 11 you'll want to join us as we host Melissa Menzer for a trip through her imagination.

The photos here are from our Memory Jar Workshop in July. Lots of fun!

And what great variety in the finished pieces. This is a group of first timers, so just imagine what you can do with a little help from our talented teacher.

We still have space available for the Saturday, Dec. 11 workshop. Melissa supplies all the materials and you bring an idea for a memory jar plus your imagination.

9:30am - 4:30pm; $75 includes all materials.

Call the gallery to register, 407-323-2774.

Ushering in a New Season

As the calendar advances, our gallery changes and we usher in a new season. This year we are celebrating PEACE....which never goes out of style. Hope you can swing by the gallery to catch some of our favorite folk artists and to see the glorious displays of ornaments, seasonal gifts, and decor. We love to celebrate!

We start the season with an Open House on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 11am to 4pm.

Looky Looky! Great Press!

We're tickled to the bottom of our spooky boots! Spirits in Sanford is featured in a six page spread in the October issue of Orlando Home and Leisure magazine.

Just take a look at the online issue and you'll be drooling like we were. You'll find us on page 54 when you select the Contents button from the home page.

We're proud to have Jorge de Rojas and Dianne Waldron so beautifully photographed for the spread.

Three days and counting...counting...counting! Can't wait to see all our Halloween friends!

Mixing it up for Halloween!

What a thrill to be listed in the "What's Happening" column of one of our favorite magazines, Where Women Create. That's how artist Sarah Whitmire found out about our Halloween art show. And once we saw Sarah's mixed media creations, we knew she would be a great addition to our event.

Check out how busy she stays on her blog!

All the way from Indiana and Maryland

My, that guy has some big eyes, doesn't he? All the better to scare you with!

Our show this year is growing, with the addition of several new artists.

Debb George will be traveling to the Sunshine State all the way from Indiana. She just might get the award for traveling the farthest for her love of Halloween art!

Also packing his bags for a little Florida time is Chris Klingler from Maryland.

Chris will be showcasing his wonderful talent for pen and ink illustration, plus an amusing assortment of watercolors and colored pencil creations.

Wickedly Good Fun

For this year's 2nd annual "Spirits in Sanford" Halloween art show, we are thrilled to add several new artists.

Dianne Waldron has been indulging her love of Halloween and her talent in the needle arts over the last 20 years. She designs, sews, stuffs, and sometimes sculpts each one of her whimsical figures.

Just like these little characters, we're eagerly anticipating the arrival of October 9!

Spirits in Sanford set to arrive soooooon!

Our wickedly fun sensibilities are stirring, with October 9 just around the corner! That's when Spirits in Sanford will take over the gallery.

We are thrilled to have 6 talented artists arriving with trunk loads of original Halloween art just for your picking.

Jorge de Rojas (fresh from his trip to California's Halloween and Vine event) will be making his second appearance with our show. Some of his handiwork is shown here.

Check out his blog for more creepy fun!

Farewell to Bob Ross

With sadness, we share the news that Butch's friend and fowl, Bob Ross, died in his sleep today.

Born in 1990, Bob Ross was by all accounts the oldest chicken in the world. And no doubt, the only mind reading chicken who traveled to art festivals from New York to California.

Bob was a show chicken, a White Crested Black Polish and he will be dearly missed.

The painting of Bob that Butch brought for the Straw into Gold show is a humorous portrait and will be a lasting tribute to a unique bird.

Straw Into Gold

Jan. 22 - Feb. 14, 2010

Packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking....this is the UN-glamorous part of being an artist. But the hard work pays off when folks arrive for an opening and revel in all the handiwork.

Butch Anthony's trip to Florida was well worth it, as adoring fans clamored to take home a prize fish or a souvenir of his artwork at the opening reception of Straw Into Gold.

Check the website at http://jtfolkart.com/ under the Current Show tab for selected pieces from the show.

Special Delivery

Roy Minshew visited us just before Christmas and brought a very special addition to the gallery. This Jumping Dog is quite the attention getter! He stands over five feet tall, complete with his own stick for retrieving. Roy's detailed carving skills are shown off quite nicely on the dog's coat, don't you think?

Tablescape Fun

What a fun way to round out our year...with The Big Guy and four of his deer friends gathered for a festive meal. Thanks to artist Theresa Disney, our tablescape for the Holiday Tour of Homes was fabu!

Artistic Gifts

Forging good relationships with artists is one of the highlights of my work in the gallery. I was so tickled when Melissa Menzer shared a special gift with me at her recent trunk show. It's a "Monkey Artist" spoonbeam. Melissa has outfitted the monkey with a beret and an old tube of paint along with a paintbrush. Spoonbeams are one of Melissa's trademark creations, making good use of old silver spoons and pie servers, she sculpts and paints clay faces and adds ephemera and antique bits. You can see one of my favorite pieces on our website at http://www.jtfolkart.com/ (look under the tab marked Current Show.)

Table for Four, Party of Claus

What would the holidays be without a festive table?! We love to show off our artists and find fun ways to share their work. When Theresa Disney visited in November, she found time to paint a herd of reindeer along with "the big guy" in the red suit. They are the highlight of our 2009 tablescape in this weekend's Holiday Tour of Homes here in Sanford. Check back for a few more pics when Mary does the final set up on Friday morning.

Painting up a Storm

Artist Theresa Disney paid us a visit for her trunk show on Nov. 21 and painted up a storm while she was here.
She's putting the finishing touches on her pendants that feature angels, birds, flowers, and devilish faces.
The gallery is chock full of Theresa's winsome creations, from paper mache dogs to tabletop mermaids.
Visit the Current Show page on our website to see additional works by Theresa.

A New Home for Blackie

When a Jacksonville Beach couple visited the gallery and spied the little black doggie in our front window, they knew he would be going home with them! "Blackie" (above on the left) fits right in with their trio of Scotties.

Artist Theresa Disney sculpts in paper mache and imbues each one of her creations with a sense of humor and heart. "Blackie" tugged on the heartstrings of Nancy and Greg. When they saw this little fella, he reminded them of Jonah, their very special two year old.

Nancy says that Jonah was the seventh of eight pups and was born lame. When he was rejected by his mother, they adopted him. He doesn't let his injury slow him down. On their morning walks, Jonah keeps up just fine with a sideways hop.

Who's Nice?

For all the folks on your list who've been nice, you'll be sure to find something special for them in the gallery. Robin is showing off what we fondly refer to as "the puffy frame." It's made of cloth and stuffed with batting. It's designed to hang from a wide grosgrain ribbon and hold a bulletin board or lightweight artwork. It's an eye catcher!

50th Anniversary

This year, the peace sign is 50 years old. In honor of that milestone, we're celebrating a peace-filled holiday with ornaments and wreaths that fit the theme.

Mary is putting the finishing touches on the peace tree, all decked out with glitter and good tidings.

Our opening reception for Folk Art for the Holidays is Nov. 8, so we'll keep decorating until every corner is festive and bright.
